What you need to know about calluses and callus treatment

If you have an area of thick, hard skin on your foot, chances are it’s a callus. Calluses can form on your heel, outside your big toe, or on callusesthe ball of your foot. They may look like a skin condition, but they are actually the result of a bone in your foot pressing against your shoe for a long period of time. Your skin becomes irritated and over time, it hardens forming a callus. Dr. Paul Potach, your podiatrist in Wheeling, Illinois wants you to know how to prevent calluses and what to do if you have one.

To prevent calluses, Dr. Potach wants you to wear supportive shoes, with plenty of room so they don’t rub against your foot. You can also use custom-fit orthotics to correct poor foot alignment. You should also wear socks with padded toes and heels. Moleskin or callus pads can also be worn for added padding and protection.

If you develop a callus, you can try over-the-counter callus removers, but these products contain acid which can cause chemical burns, so apply carefully. You can also try soaking your feet in warm water with soap. After your skin is softened, you can use a pumice stone to file away dead skin. Apply a moisturizing cream or lotion to soften the skin on your feet.

If you have a thick callus and need help to treat it, call Dr. Potach. He will trim it and apply padding to help you with pain relief. Additionally, he may prescribe professional strength anti-inflammatory medication or cortisone injections to relieve swelling and inflammation. If you have recurring calluses due to a bone abnormality, surgery might be indicated.

When calluses form on your feet, you can have difficulty wearing shoes comfortably. You don’t have to suffer when help is just a phone call away. If you have a stubborn callus that doesn’t go away, it’s time to call Dr. Paul Potach, your podiatrist with offices in Wheeling, and Berwyn, Illinois. You deserve happy feet, so call today!
